The Mood of the Wood (from the series Inanimate Subjects)
This is the stem of a table lamp carved out of ebony or some similarly dark wood. The camera saw it as a moody subject and cast it in sepia tones without any help form a sepia filter. When I encounter carved wooden objects like this, I sometimes if the wood itself inspired the carving. With sculpture I have little doubt. Everything is infused by the sculptor and nothing at all belongs to the stone.
But wood has life and this life that struggles with the carver’s knife to give birth to a work like this. The wood knows what it wishes to become and the carver is led by this woody mood to give birth to something young, new and unique. This piece of African wood wanted to help bring light into the world.
