The Hummingbird Clearwing Is Not A Hummingbird (from the series: They Move Amongst Us)
They look like hummingbirds and they dart about like hummingbirds, beating their wings at a dramatic pace. Just like hummingbirds, you will find them in many parts of the US, from Texas through to California and all the way up to Alsaka. Because they move fast they can fool you, but you can recognize them by two characteristics; they have no beak and they are much smaller than most hummingbirds.
They are lepidoptra – an unusual species of moth that feeds on the pollen of a variety of flowers. They sleep for most of they day and zoom into flower gardens at dusk, when the hummingbirds are putting their children to bed – telling them stories of how they flew all the way from the Yucatan across the Gulf of Mexico and swooped into Texas to greet the spring.
